light-density open-cell foam

Light-density open-cell foam SPF is commonly known as half-pound foam.  It is a semi-rigid material with a sponge-like appearance that expands during installation and creates small open cells. Due to its ability to expand during the application, it fills cracks, crevices, and voids, while adhering to irregular surfaces or substrates to form air-sealing insulation.

Unlike medium-density closed-cell SPF, it is not a vapor barrier.  When installed at 5.5 inches or more, it does however act as an air barrier.  Also, it provides sound reduction by blocking and absorbing air leakage.  At Exotherm, we use Genyk B-1050 open-cell spray foam, which is also fully water blown.  It’s most commonly used in garages with living quarters above it, as these require R31 and 6-8 inches of half a pound will do the trick nicely, which, as stated above, also creates an air barrier to keep out harmful gas emitted from vehicles.

Benefits of Light-density open-cell foam SPF
  • Light-density open-cell foam insulation’s high R-value implies it provides great thermal insulation and aids in lowering energy usage and utility expenses.

  • Light-density open-cell foam insulation, in addition to its thermal benefits, has excellent sound insulation capabilities that can aid in lowering indoor noise levels and fostering a more relaxing atmosphere.

  • For better indoor air quality and less energy loss, choose insulation with air-sealing capabilities, such as light-density open-cell foam.

  • Light-density open-cell foam insulation is versatile because it may be used in a wide variety of settings, from walls and roofs to foundations, and in a range of thicknesses to satisfy the varying requirements of various buildings and structures.

  • Cost-effective: Many building owners and builders choose light-density open-cell foam insulation because it is a more affordable alternative to closed-cell foam insulation.
