Light-density open-cell foam SPF is commonly known as half-pound foam. It is a semi-rigid material with a sponge-like appearance that expands during installation and creates small open cells. Due to its ability to expand during the application, it fills cracks, crevices, and voids, while adhering to irregular surfaces or substrates to form air-sealing insulation.
Unlike medium-density closed-cell SPF, it is not a vapor barrier. When installed at 5.5 inches or more, it does however act as an air barrier. Also, it provides sound reduction by blocking and absorbing air leakage. At Exotherm, we use Genyk B-1050 open-cell spray foam, which is also fully water blown. It’s most commonly used in garages with living quarters above it, as these require R31 and 6-8 inches of half a pound will do the trick nicely, which, as stated above, also creates an air barrier to keep out harmful gas emitted from vehicles.
